Does anyone know of an alternative to this plugin? It appears to be a great idea but has not been updated for some time.

Have you tried oasis workflow? https://wordpress.org/plugins/oasis-workflow/.

It provides ways to create custom editorial workflows.

They are not the same, not by a long shot. Oasis Workflow is a great plugin, but does not do the same thing, nor offer the same features, as Edit Flow.
