Am I right in thinking that this plugin can create custom posts / custom fields types on import

or

do I need to create the custom post type (and any custom fields) first then import data that corresponds to the type and fields ?

Yes you can import posts to custom posts type and custom fields that exists.

Yes, no types are created, but wp default custom fields are created on the fly.

WordPress default custom fields are without any CF plugins. can be seen in post edit view. If not turn on in screen options from top.
