Text Link instead of thumbnail

I may be missing the obvious but how do I use text with the shortcode to have a link which says ‘visit our gallery of work’ instead of using a thumbnail.

I want to have a link in the body of the text, and it works fine in firefox but in chrome it just gives me an inline box in the text with a 1px keyline and no text inside it. I have tried the [shortcode]visible link[/shortcode] as suggested in the WP codex.

(I’m afraid I can’t send you a link as the site is hidden at the moment while I’m building it behind the old site)
