No, I haven’t set a custom Welcome Message in the Jetpack Newsletter settings. It should still the default.
Hi @nhoeller,
I tested this on your site by subscribing from both the English (srq.dravellanet.com/blog/) and the Spanish version (srq.dravellanet.com/es/blog-es/). In both cases, the confirmation and welcome emails arrived in English.
Since I wasn’t able to reproduce the issue, a couple of questions that might help narrow it down:
- Is the issue still happening? If you subscribe with a fresh email right now, does the confirmation still come in Spanish?
- When your subscribers sign up, do they happen to have a WordPress.com account with their language set to Spanish? The confirmation email language can be influenced by the subscriber’s WordPress.com account language rather than the site’s language setting.
- In your WPML settings, do you have automatic language detection enabled (based on browser language or geolocation)? If so, WPML might be passing a Spanish locale to Jetpack at the moment of subscription, even if the page appears to be in English.
Any of these details would help us dig further into this.
Hi @alinclamba,
Thank you for your response. Please see my reply to each of your questions below:
- I ran a new test in English and Spanish, and just as you experienced, I’m now getting the confirmation and welcome emails in English.
- For this test, it was done using two email addresses that did not have existing WordPress.com accounts, but the original accounts I mentioned in this ticket that were getting the Spanish emails DID have existing accounts.
- I checked the WPML settings, and automatic language detection is not enabled. “Disable browser language redirect” is selected.
I ran another test with an existing WordPress.com account that had their language set to Spanish in the WordPress.com settings. After subscribing to the blog via the Spanish translated Blog page, I received the Spanish confirmation email. When the account was confirmed, it gave me the English welcome email.
I also published a test page to see how it would work (you may have received these too if your subscription was still active). All of the subscribed users received the English translated blog post, but the text outside that article was in Spanish. I also published the Spanish translation shortly after, and again all subscribers received it, regardless of whether they subscribed from the English or Spanish version of the blog page, and all text within the email was in Spanish.
Clearly, I’m either missing something in the way these are set up, or maybe there are compatibility issues between Jetpack and WPML. Ideally, I’d like for users who subscribe to the blog from their select language to only receive blog posts in that language.
Hi @nhoeller ,
Thanks for all the testing, really helpful. Let me summarize what we’re seeing based on your results to make sure we’re on the same page:
- The original issue (confirmation and welcome emails in Spanish) is no longer happening. Your fresh tests are coming through in English, which matches what Alin saw when testing as well.
- The confirmation email language follows the subscriber’s WordPress.com account language. Your test with a Spanish-set WP.com account confirmed this: Spanish confirmation. That’s expected behavior.
- When you published an English post, the article content was in English but the text around it (“Continue Reading,” dates, etc.) came through in Spanish. This is likely a compatibility gap between WPML and Jetpack where WPML’s active locale bleeds into the email template.
- All subscribers received both the English and Spanish versions of your post, regardless of which language they subscribed from.
Does that match what you’re seeing on your end?
On point 4, language-based subscriber filtering isn’t something Jetpack Newsletter supports today, but if that’s something that would help your workflow, we can pass it along as a feature request to the team.
Looking forward to hearing back!
