Hey @kalebvanesa!
Great question — and totally understandable to want to protect those color settings you’ve worked hard on!
Here’s the short answer: it depends on whether you’re importing a complete site or a single page.
If you’re importing a single-page template — no worries at all! Importing a single-page template will not affect anything on your website. It simply creates a new page as a draft, so your existing customizer settings stay completely untouched.
If you’re importing a complete site template: then yes, your customizer settings (including your global color palette) could be overwritten by the new template’s styles.
The good news? Starter Templates has a built-in safety net for this! While importing a complete site, the plugin automatically creates a backup of your existing customizer settings, saved to /wp-content/uploads/astra-sites/json on your server. So even if things change, you’re not starting from scratch.
To restore your original settings after importing, here’s what to do:
1. Access that backup folder via FTP (e.g. FileZilla) and download the .JSON backup file (not the text file).
2. Install and activate the Import / Export Customizer Settings plugin from WordPress.org.
3. Once activated, you’ll find an “Import Settings” option in the Astra Settings General tab — just upload your backup file there, and your customizer settings will be restored.
> Important note: This restore process works only with the Astra theme. Also, as a general best practice, we always recommend taking a full site backup before any major import.
