The plugin tries to load the Roboto font from google fonts, causing a 404 error.
After deactivating the plugin, the error dissapears, because there is no longer an attempt to load the font, as can be seen in the browsers dev console.

Reproduce: Click an image in the Media Library with dev console open and the 404 appears, trying to load from the URL above.

    Hello @psyflex,

I hope things are going well for you.

I tried to replicate the issue on my local site by opening the console logs, navigating to the Media Library, and clicking the image. Unfortunately, there is no error.

It could be that another component from another plugin or theme is interfering and showing the 404 error. I tried to locate it, but there is no request made to https://fonts.gstatic.com. I also searched in the plugin files, and there is no indication of the Roboto font.
Here are some images for reference:

    https://monosnap.ai/file/E73OW7JIsYWEKYnRTJ5vqvXDu4MiH5

Can you please share a screenshot from your end of the console logs and the network tab for that specific error so we have a clearer picture to better understand it?

Also, I would like to share a few options for you to try:
    1. Can you please downgrade by downloading any recent version of Smush and see if the same issue is reported there from here:
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-smushit/advanced/.

    2. Would you mind creating a Staging site? If the site hosting server has any features, then great; otherwise, you can try this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-staging/.

    3. After creating the staging site, log in to the staging site and check if you still get the same issue there. If yes, deactivate all the plugins and set the WordPress theme to WordPress TwentyTwenty Five. This way, we will try to narrow it down to the component (Plugins or Theme) from which this issue originates.

I’m suggesting this test because on my test site, I tried installing the latest version of Smush, and I couldn’t replicate the issue.

You can refer to the conflict test steps too: https://wpmudev.com/docs/getting-started/getting-support/#conflict-test.

Please follow the given steps and share the outcome with us, so we can help further to resolve the issue.

    Kind Regards,

    Hello Imran,

You are absolutely correct, the 404 is not coming from your plugin, but somewhere else.
I am very sorry for causing you unnecessary work by reporting a bug to the wrong developer :'(

    Kind regards,
    psyflex
