URGENT: Sudden Drop in Sitekit/GA4 Traffic
-
Hi there,
We have seen a sudden drop in GA traffic on 29th Feb on the day google site kit was set up from my main property/tag. GA is flagging this extreme low traffic as an anomaly.
I think the issue is google site kit or something blocking the tagging. I tried to troubleshoot with Tag Assistant but couldn’t see an issue

Hi @robbiemcivor, thanks for raising this. As of right now, it’s February 20th so is this date correct or is this Feb 2024? Just wanted to confirm this date firstly.
Could you also confirm where this is being flagged? I.e is this on the Analytics platform? If you could share your Site Health information then I can also check this to see if everything is set up as I would expect to see it. You can use this form to share privately if preferred.
Thanks for getting back to me Adam.
Apologies! Completely miss typed. The traffic drop off occurred when google tool kit was set up which was the 29th January. The traffic drop off has been seen since then into February.
Yes this drop in traffic is mirrored in both Tool kit Dashboard & GA. Also I have completed the form where I’ve shared the site health copied from clipboard, thank you!
@robbiemcivor No problem at all and thanks for confirming the date. When checking your site I can see what the problem is here. If you check your site via https://tagassistant.google.com/ and select your Analytics tag and open the consent tab, you’ll see that consent is not being granted for users who visit your site.
This will be because you currently don’t give users the option to grant these permissions as per the Digital Markets Act (DMA) act regarding user consent. The Google EU user consent policy (EUUCP) requires site owners to implement consent mode for Ads and Analytics customers in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
We have a comprehensive guide on how to set up and configure consent mode with Site Kit explaining what is required and what consent management plugins we recommend to use for consent mode. I’d be happy to help with any of this if you have any issues but once you have everything set up I’d be happy to check your site once more to ensure user consent is being given.
Let me know if you have any questions on the above information.
Thanks Adam. I have reactivated CookieYes (one of the approved Google recommended Cookie Plugins) across the site and ensured that the consent mode is enabled so hopefully the consent should be being granted now for visiting users. I can’t see anything else to follow on the guide so assume that should work? Could you check for me please
@robbiemcivor Thanks for checking that and for reactivating the CookieYes plugin. I can confirm that I can now see the consent being granted once I give my consent via the consent banner. This should be all you need and you should start to see Analytics data come through once more.
If you do run into any other issues please do let us know though and we will be more than happy to help you! Please also feel free to leave us a plugin review if you have a moment, thanks and all the best with your website!
Thanks for your help! I hope that solves the issue. Will keep you updated on if the data returns!
@robbiemcivor Perfect and yes please do!
Hi @adamdunnage just an update on this one. Traffic is pulling through better than it was at the height of the issue but still considerably below even the lowest point we had before setting up Google site kit. Can you spot any other issues that maybe causing this?
Hi @robbiemcivor, thanks for getting back in touch. This is to be expected when setting up consent mode as some visitors to your site may not give consent and therefore these visits won’t be tracked. I don’t see anything else that would impact your site visits and data.
I hope this helps and if you do see anything else on the Site Kit side of things that you need help with then please don’t hesitate to reach out and we will be happy to help!
Hi @adamdunnage thanks for confirming I think I’m going to delete google site kit as it showing much such minimal traffic and analytics scores. I’ve effectively lost 80%/90% of my traffic view that I had before since I added it to my wordpress site.
@robbiemcivor I’m sorry to hear that.As confirmed previously with you, everything on the Site Kit side looks correct and your consent management is set up correctly with consent mode.
This isn’t a Site Kit specific issue and the legislation around user consent still applies for your website regardless of having Site Kit or not so I would expect you to see the same visitor traffic without Site Kit.
If there’s anything else on the Site Kit side I can help with then please do say and I’d be happy to help. I wish you all the best with your website and traffic.
Just seems so odd I’m testing it on my side and looking in analytics. I accept the cookie policy and I’m still not being counted as an active user in analytics which looks to me like its not working at all how it should. It says no active users in last 30 mins even when i refresh view. Looks to me that nothing is firing for the tags even when cookies are accepted. Should I try a different cookie provider in wordpress?
@robbiemcivor Checking your site once again I no longer see user permissions being granted which is why you’ll still be seeing low traffic. Have you since changed anything on your site? It looks like there are 2 separate consent prompts when visiting your site. This could be causing a conflict so I’d suggest only using the CookieYes plugin for this.
Please feel free to familiarise yourself once more with our consent mode guide on how to configure consent mode with Site Kit. Once you have done so and made the necessary changes, I’d be happy to check your setup once more to see if consent is once again being granted as expected.
Ahh that’s annoying all I’ve done since speaking to you was deactivating WP Consent API that I had added based on Site Kits recommendations. I wanted to see having this on top of the cookieyes plugin was causing analytics issues.
I think the two prompts are an issue as you’ve highlighted but I cant find in wordpress where the first prompt is originating from.
@robbiemcivor This will be why your consent mode setup has broken down. The WP Consent API plugin is a required part of the consent mode setup and without this, the user consent can’t be managed and updated which is resulting in your traffic not being recorded.
If you activate the WP Consent API plugin once more, I can once again check your setup to see if that resolves the issue. If it does not, then you may need to look into the multiple consent prompts.
