OBJECTIVE: Safely install a new theme on a large blog site (>2GB) that I’ve maintained for >10 years.

    STEPS:
    1. Created HostGator subdomain from main site (without test.).
    2. Used “All-in-One WP Migration” and paid extension to export and then import to new/staging site.
    3. Got “Safe Mode has been activated” warning. Now unable to edit test site.
    4. Updated wp-config.php to add “define( ‘JETPACK_STAGING_MODE’, true );” but still stuck in Safe Mode.
    5. Tried disconnecting Jetpack from main site, but problem persisted on staging site, so reconnected on main site to preserve security.
Staging site is still in Safe Mode.

    QUESTIONS:
    1. What can/should I do from here?
    2. Is there a way to force Jetpack out of safe mode on the staging site? I can’t seem to find a way to disconnect Jetpack, or disable it, on staging site since control panel options are limited.
    3. Should I delay site cleanup with new theme until after WordPress 6.2 with a new block theme?

  • When you use a plugin like that to migrate a site while Jetpack is installed and connected, it migrates the Jetpack site ID and other information to the other site. This can create the issue you’re experiencing, as Jetpack detects two identical sites with identical IDs, rather than two sites with two different IDs.

As a first step, I’d recommend fully connecting Jetpack on the main site. Right now, Jetpack is only partially connected there. You can do that by following these steps:

    1. Log into the main site’s WP Admin dashboard.
    2. From the main WordPress menu, go to Jetpack.
    3. Scroll down to find the “Account Connection” area.
    4. Click “Connect your WordPress.com account” to fully connect Jetpack to your WordPress.com account.

After that, I’d recommend fully deleting Jetpack from the staging site, and reinstalling it. You can find instructions for that here: https://jetpack.com/support/reconnecting-reinstalling-jetpack/#reinstalling-jetpack

Let us know how that goes!
