Something happened
-
I don’t know what happened to my Yoast plugin but it is acting weird. I deactivated it last night and activated it again, and now it doesn’t work properly. I tried flushing cache and deactivate and activate it again, but nothing works.
In the post editor, Yoast looks like this now https://imgur.com/eKGnzJO
And in the settings, the dashboard button and first time configuration buttons don’t do anything.

Why do I get this message??
“We noticed that you haven’t fully configured Yoast SEO yet. Optimise your SEO settings even further by using our improved First-time configuration.”
When I click the first time configuration button, nothing happens. Is everything messed up now? My SEO is RIP?
I even tried deleting the plugin and installing it again, same thing.
When I click “save” I get tons of…
does not seem to be a valid url. Please correct.
Also, when I hit “save”, all my settings are restored to default again. What a disaster.
In console I have one js error. Dunno if it’s related.
Uncaught TypeError: document.querySelector(…) is null
https://www.mysite.com/:1044Using the latest versions of WordPress and Yoast. Had Yoast for years.
Rolled back to 20.8 and now it works fine again!! I think you guys messed up and it has caused me loads of time consuming problems.
Hello @danniee001
Thanks for using the Yoast SEO plugin. The first screenshot shows that you are experiencing a blank meta box. We enocurage you to update to the latest version to troubleshoot the issue as you’d be missing out on new features and bug fixes.
A blank meta box issue occurs due to a JavaScript conflict. We’d like you to perform a conflict check to help us determine the next steps while saving you time.
Often, we see problems occur in combination with another plugin or theme. The fastest way to rule out any conflict is to deactivate all non-Yoast plugins and switch to a standard theme like Twenty Twenty-Two.
Please test this on your development or staging site if you have one. If not, we recommend using the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin. This plugin has a troubleshooting mode, which does not affect normal visitors to your site.
If you’re unfamiliar with checking for conflicts, we’d like to point you to a step-by-step guide that will walk you through the process: How to check for plugin conflicts
If you feel uncomfortable doing this yourself or if this does not solve your issue, our Yoast SEO Premium plugin comes with one year of (technical) support.
Didn’t you read my posts!!???? I rolled back to previous version 20.8 and now all works great again. You guys messed up when you updated your plugin.
Same issue here after the last update today … Have to rollback or a patch is coming sooooooooooooooon ?
So incredibly annoying. Almost ready to drop Yoast after this.
back to 20.8 works fine ……
Thanks for confirming that rolling back to v20.8 fixed the issue, @danniee001 and @magicfilou. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to reproduce this issue on our end yet. The questions below will help us diagnose the cause of the problem:
- Were you able to perform a conflict check? Does the problem still occur when all non-Yoast plugins are deactivated and you switch your theme to a default WordPress theme like Twenty Twenty-Two?
- When the Yoast meta box shows blank on the post edit screen, do any JavaScript errors appear in the browser’s console? This help article explains how to check for JavaScript errors. A screenshot of the errors would be helpful.

Sorry, there is no chance I am going to have time to do this work for you. I run a fairly big site and can’t just switch of my theme and do a bunch of testing.
All I can say is that 20.9 works on two of my other sites which uses the same theme, so it’s not that.
Also, I did already mention a js error earlier in the post, but I am not sure if it’s related to this issue.
