• Hi there,

I have a website that is coming up with a critical error and I can’t log on. I have tried disabling the plugins and the theme and have manually updated wordpress but it is still not working. I have since found the following error but I am unsure how I should fix this – can anyone help? Fairly new to all this and still learning!

PHP Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Call to undefined function wp_unregister_GLOBALS() in /home/domains/vol2/039/3255039/user/htdocs/wp-settings.php:61

    Many thanks

It may be that you are missing one or more WP files. Please try step #1 here: https://wordpress.org/support/article/updating-wordpress/#manual-update

Please try again after deleting all PHP files in the site’s root (except wp-config.php) and the directories wp-admin and wp-includes.

Ok, I’ve done that and now when I go to the website, it gives this:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ”Failed <spa’ (T_ENCAPSED_AND_WHITESPACE) in /home/domains/vol2/039/3255039/user/htdocs/wp-includes/post.php on line 457

Notice: is_embed was called incorrectly. Conditional query tags do not work before the query is run. Before then, they always return false. Please see Debugging in WordPress for more information. It seems you have a “coming soon” plugin active, too. Please disable that.

It isn’t showing in my FTP anymore as I deactivated a while back? Where else could it be?

We are talking about the URL in your profile, right? If not, please provide a link to the site in question.

Apologies, I thought it was in the code, my mistake.

    The website is wooliesdumfries.co.uk

It still looks like there are corrupt files. How are you uploading the new/replacement wp files?

    Thread Starter kristy1888

    (@kristy1888)

Through FTP – I downloaded from the wordpress website and then uploaded to my FTP. Was this correct?

Yes, it should be, but Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ”Failed <spa’ (T_ENCAPSED_AND_WHITESPACE) says it’s corrupt.

I know you’ve done this several times, but have you downloaded afresh from wp.org each time?
