Hello WordPress Community! I have a question about Jetpack, and preventing spam subscribers.

There doesn’t seem to be spam protection for the subscription widget, or subscriptions in general. We have Akismet installed, but it’s not working. We’re dealing with a thousand fake email sign ups in the last few days.

My team has looked for a solution, but we’ve only turned up a couple posts that are having a similar issue. One post says that it’s not working because Jetpack is not connected to a WP.org account (which ours is connected correctly). Here are similar (but not identical) posts.

    https://wordpress.org/support/topic/captcha-for-jetpack-blog-subscription-widget/
    https://wordpress.org/support/topic/does-not-support-recaptcha/
    https://wordpress.org/support/topic/integration-with-forms-from-jetpack-plugin/

    So, the big two questions!

    1. How do we remove the thousand fake subscribers?
    2. How do we implement signup protection that will prevent spam signups?

We don’t want to implement something other than Jetpack, but we’re considering other options. I’d like to see if we can fix the problem first though. Any help from the WordPress community is appreciated very much. Thank you everyone!

    Hi there,

Jetpack spam protection/Akismet does not have anything to do with subscriptions. It only blocks spam on comments and contact form submissions.

    1. How do we remove the thousand fake subscribers?

Why is it important to you to remove these? There is no possible way anyone can harm your site simply by subscribing to it. And the subscription emails are generated on, and sent from our servers, not your site’s, so this also won’t use up any memory, processes, or bandwidth on your server.

That said, the only way to remove a Jetpack subscriber from your site is one at a time from My Site ->Manage ->People ->Email Followers on WordPress.com. There is no option to bulk-remove followers, and it’s also not something our support team can do for you.

    2. How do we implement signup protection that will prevent spam signups?

Jetpack subscriptions are powered by WordPress.com, and WordPress.com has measures in place to prevent bulk subscriptions. If these subscriptions weren’t blocked, it means the filters on WordPress.com don’t consider them spam.

Jetpack subscriptions does not include any additional features for you to control this, or to manually block specific emails/groups of emails/IPs from subscribing to your site, so if you want the ability to do that, you’ll need to use a different subscription service instead of Jetpack.

We’re not able to suggest any alternatives for you. For that type of recommendation, please ask in the general support forum.
