This morning, I updated to WooCommerce version 4.5.1, on WordPress 5.5.1

I have nearly 1000 products in WooCommerce. Trying to search my inventory on /wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=product returns no results, regardless of search term. I tried searching by full product name, partial product name, the letter ‘a’, all gave no results.

All of my inventory is listed in the table. Additionally, filtering does work.

The Product Search on the web site is working, only product search on the product admin page is not working.

I disabled all plugins except WooCommerce, and switched the theme to Twentytwenty, this had no effect.

I am using the free version of WooCommerce – was this feature simply removed?

  • Hi @wige2480! No, this functionality wasn’t removed. We’ve seen this problem pop up a few times, usually as a result of WordPress 5.5, so that would be my guess as to what is happening here, although it’s odd that it only started for you once you upgraded to WC 4.5.1. One thing that has worked well to fix this issue is this helper plugin. Can you install that and see if it fixes the issue?

I added that plugin and there was no change. I also deactivated and reactivated WooCommerce entirely and that did not fix it either.

I did note in the URL, the search appears to just be the normal blog search filtered on post_type:
    /wp-admin/edit.php?s=a&post_status=all&post_type=product&action=-1&product_cat&product_type&stock_status&paged=1&action2=-1

If I replace “product” with “post” in the bolded spot, it returns the blog posts containing the letter “a”. This tells me the problem is most likely with the database rather than something client side in the page?

Also, if I remove ‘post_type=product&’ from the url, I get the same result, all the blog posts, no products.

During the update, WooCommerce made some changes to the database structure. Could this have broken a table link or something?

    Ok, another piece of fun…

The search works just fine on the front end. Customers can use product search with this URL:
    /?s=alf&product_cat=&post_type=product

So… its probably not the database.

    More information…

Apparently, I was on 4.4.1. So, I deleted WC 4.5.1 and installed 4.4.1 from GitHub, and it works fine. Then, I installed 4.5.0 from GitHub over it, and same problem. So it looks like the problem is in the update from 4.4.1 to 4.5.1.

Also, I am on a WordPress Network/Multisite. Maybe this is something specific to multisite installs?

For the moment I am going to run 4.4.1 because my client needs this functionality, but hopefully you will find a solution and I can upgrade to stay current.

Hi @wige2480, thanks for the detailed troubleshooting steps. At this point, I’d recommend conflict testing, ideally on a staging site. You can use the Health Check and Troubleshooting plugin to make this easier. The “troubleshooting mode” of this plugin will allow you to simulate how your site would look and behave with plugins disabled and a default theme without actually changing the site.

These are the steps you should take:

    1. Back up your site. Many hosting providers offer a way to do this, and there are plugins such as WP Database Backup that offer this functionality if backing up your database through your host is not an option.
    2. Update all your plugins and your theme to their latest versions and see if the problem fixes itself.
    3. Turn on Troubleshooting Mode in the Health Check plugin by going to Tools > Site Health > Troubleshooting and clicking “Enable Troubleshooting Mode.” Then, while in Troubleshooting Mode:
    4. Make sure your theme is set to Twenty Twenty.
    5. Make sure all plugins are deactivated, and then activate WooCommerce (4.5).
    6. Repeat the action that is causing the problem.

If you’re not seeing the same problem after completing the conflict test, then you know the problem was with the plugins and/or theme you deactivated. To figure out which one is causing the problem, reactivate them one by one, testing after each, until you find the one causing conflict.

We haven’t heard back from you in a while, so I’m going to mark this as resolved. Feel free to start a new thread if you have any further questions!
