I had a nice little blog running right on my front page, so when you went to my site, you’d see my blog. I wanted to change that a bit, and I had downloaded all my websites files the other day. However, I can’t find them anywhere.

Attempts to salvage and fix things seemed to have made things worse. I’m really at a loss of what to do.

What I would like to do: get WP working on my homepage again, so when you go to my site, you immediately see my blog.

I’ve got an existing database with all of my posts and comments and all that.

    I use bravenet.

I know I should have made real sure that my backup copies were properly set up, but its too late for that now. Help please?

  • No, it may not be too late to retrieve some backups. I’ve never even heard of bravenet, but every other web host I’ve looked at offers backups of both databases and all web site files, from the most recent day or weekend.

So, hurry and see if your web host has such backups, because as soon as they make a new copy, the previous one will likely be erased.

Thanks adiant. I’m willing to just start over, but I made the blog a year ago, and really haven’t do anything except for post on it. As long as I can just get a new installation to use the old database, I’m willing to reinstal themes and what not.

I just can’t remember how to get it to show up on the homepage, or rather, so it IS the home page, like when you go to my address, its right there.

I thinkin, if I delete al the WP files, maybe I can go from there? I don’t know.

Perhaps all you are looking for is on the Admin Dashboard, in the left sidebar, select, under Settings, Reading.

Then, under Front Page Displays, choose what you want to appear on the home page of your site.

If you installed WordPress in a folder, then you have a little more to do. You should probably start here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress You’ll probably want to leave WordPress in the folder and move the blog to the Root.

Ok, I figured out how to get the blog to show up on the first page again, but I just need to figure out how to use the old database. i created a new database to see what would happen. Seems to work now.

Ok, here’s the deal. The old blog files were so badly screwed up by yours truly, I can’t even log in. I can see the old posts though, so thats good. The theme I was using has been trashed, so not sure what’s the problem with tht. At least the posts are there.

I created a new blog installation to try to figure out what to do. That works, but, I used a new database. Now, is there anyway to change the new installation so that it reads the old database? How do I do this?

Thanks for your help so far.

The wp-config.php file in the WordPress folder tells WordPress what database to use. Back it up, then do an edit on it, using the other installation’s version as a guide.

ok, so if I just change the information, the old DB will be used instead? And I won’t have to make any other changes or anything like reinstall things?

Umm, when I tried changing the DB entries, I ended up with a blank page. What did I do wrong?

Unfortunately, it is not that easy. There may be some entries in the old database that will still prevent you from logging on. And plug-ins for sure could get messed up because they rely on both files and database entries.

The ideal solution is to get access to the old database with any WordPress Admin page, just so you can Export the Posts, etc. And then selectively import just what you want.

I can’t log in with the old DB wordpress stuff. I get a 404 error. Solutions?

I really appreciate the help here.

I’ve never done a WordPress recovery like you’ll need, so I better let others answer. It may turn out to be as simple as copying the old database’s Posts table over to the new database.

Like I say, wait for the experts.

haha, thanks for the help. I really appreciate it. At least I could get my old theme back up and running and I’ve got something of a website for people to see.

Well, I found a link that has the correct formatting and the theme intact. So for reading purposes, its all there.

However, I can’t log in. When i try to log in, or request the password, I keep getting a HTTP 500 error message.

Any idea what is causing this problem?

BINGO! I think I may have figured it out.

First, when i renamed my WP directory, I inadvertently changed the directory from a lowercase to an upercase W. So I found that I had WordPress, and possibly 2 wordpress folders in my directory.

I discovered that the uppercase W worked the best, but I couldn’t successfully login as it kept reverting to the lowercase w.

So example, http://example.com/wordpress/wp-login.php rather than WordPress. So I backedup, then deleted the wordpress folder, then changed the upper case W to a lower case.

I got a bunch errors about missing files. I noticed that they were all lowercase W’s, so I pulled the files out of the backedupped, but deleted, lowercase folder. It worked. It seems a bit unstable right now, but at least I’m in. I’m going to upgrade it, then export the old database and put it into the new one.

Lets see if that goes ok.

Its all fixed. I just have to be careful about capitalizatoin, and do a better job backing up before change my site.

    Thanks for you help!
