• I have finally transferred posts from one website to another. The problem is that the donor site had almost 1200 plus posts but only 900 some odd were transferred. Is there a way for me to find out which posts were not copied so I can port them over manually.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • There is a plugin Export All URLs that will extract posts/pages Title, URL and Categories to a CSV file. You could run it on both, sort, and compare.
Or use any of the export to CSV plugins to get the whole post instead (then you can import those).

Thanks @joyously. Will give it a try. Can you please explain what you mean by: Or use any of the export to CSV plugins to get the whole post instead (then you can import those).

Well, the Export All URLs only outputs the title, URL, and categories. There are other plugins that export the entire post to CSV. Once you have them compared, you could then use that CSV for your import (since there are plugins to import from CSV).

@joyously. I have tried WP exporter but the site ran out of steam before all posts could be imported. Generally it was importing only some 30% of the posts. Then tried importing this WP Exporter file with WP All Import and it worked partially until I worked through my learning curve and on the 5th day finally I got all the posts in with the images but not categories and tags. I deleted posts and tried again but then WP All Import will refuse to import saying that I already have the posts in.

I then took another tack and tried importing WP All Export files and it took almost a week of tweaking, some days there were no images, some days no categories, some days no tags. Finally the 7th day there was a miracle, most of the posts came in, most categories and most images. No featured images came in and some 15% of the posts are missing but at least I’m ahead from where i started. I come from Joomla world where one can easily export articles by importing in some tables and you are finished.

Any advise on where I can import in all the posts with images, featured images, categories and tags would be appreciated but it seems above my knowledge base.

In September I finished importing a site for a client 7200 static HTML pages to WordPress posts. I first used Import HTML and then used the phpmyadmin dump to CSV in order to more easily massage the large amount of data. (I also had to create the taxonomies.) I used my own spreadsheet locally, but also Google Sheets to collaborate with the client.
Then used WP Import or CSV Importer (that I have tweaked), depending on whether I was updating or starting over (I forget why I had to do it a few times). But that site had no images, so that was a bit easier.

@joyously, wow that must have been some undertaking. For another project client has handed me a Microsoft Word mail merge file which has some 100 plus posts which has fields like Post Title, Post Content, Post category hierarchy and post tags. Is there an easy way to port it into a CSV file and the import it into WordPress.

I’ve never looked at Word formats much. Aren’t there a couple of options for saving different formats? (like save as web page and then use something like Import HTML or just “paste from Word” in Classic editor)
You might have to write a little utility to convert the format to something usable as input (whether that is CSV for a plugin or anything that phpmyadmin can use).

Thanks @joyously for all your help and brainstorming. Have used Export All URLs to identify the missing posts. Will give another stab at re-importing and if that does not work will import the missing posts one by one. Thanks again and Happy Holidays to you!

@joyously re-tried one last time and this time almost all the posts transferred over. Image URLs were not changed so I used Search and Replace to change the URL. The only hiccup is that the imported in images are not displaying in the Media Library even though are in Uploads folder.

I will give the other project of Word mail merge file a try soon and hopefully can used WP All Import to bring all posts in one go if I can auto create a CSV file from the mail merge.

Did the import transfer all the various sizes of the images? The media library shows thumbnails, but if that didn’t get generated, it doesn’t generate a new one. You might need to run the plugin Regenerate Thumbnails. (I’m just guessing here.)

    (@jfambrini)

@joyously it did not transfer images but fortunately it listed the image URL in the posts so I did a Search and Replace and changed the URL. I had already moved the images folder to Uploads so when I open individual posts the images do show, they don’t show in featured images and in the media folder. Will check out Regenerate Thumbnails.

Ah, the images are not in the database, they are just in the uploads folder. Regenerate Thumbnails won’t help with this. There is a plugin Import Legacy Media, which should help. (media already on server, just not in database)

    (@jfambrini)

@joyously, oh I see. Since Import Legacy Media has been discontinued, any other suggestions. The files in Uploads folders are in posts in tag so in a way in a database and when we call up the post the images are being pulled. Could I delete the media library without deleting reference to these images in the posts listed in or the uploads folder.

@joyously thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. Tried Media Library Fix with Regenerate Thumbnails and it recovered some of them. Am going through Plugins to see if I can find another plugin to fix it.
