Never mind guys, I got rid of the Paypal Express and used the Paypal that comes preinstalled with Woocommerce itself and worked better as it is featured within the Checkout page.
It is in fact set to virtual/Download but as the only payment is Paypal Express it comes up as invalid payment method if I try to go through the “Proceed to checkout’ and fill in the details

I want to hide the “proceed to checkout” button only and keep the paypal

The code didn’t work within the child theme but it worked through a CSS option within the customise menu.
