Please make sure your front page display option is ‘Your latest posts’ and the maximum number of posts per page is far smaller than the total number of posts.
You may use http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/demo-data-creator/ to create more dummy posts and check the automatic loading effect.
Not all themes support this plugin but twenty-twelve is exactly the best mate.
