Thanks for your reply. I realized it was the wp_xmlrpc file issue after examining the plugin report about the login attempts. I used a plugin to disable accessing the file. I do not have login problems anymore.

Hi Daniel, it took half an hour to get out of maintenance mode but then I had problems with the plugin freezing operation when dealing with databases, either dumping or even optimizing, so I downgraded the plugin to some previous version I had in a backup and now it works fine.
Really weird, I tried the solutions posted here that worked for others and they didnt work for me.
Anything to do with the database hangs for me too.
