OK, I had switched W3 on again but now deactivated it one more time. I have also updated it to the latest version. I will leave it like this.

Now, after input of the new password, the change is rejected with a message saying it’s not possible for security reasons. (in this German installation it says “Aus Sicherheitsgründen nicht möglich.”)

The issue was the iThemes Security plugin. Due to some unknown reason it suddenly caused this problem.
