I would also like to add that when I go to a var_dump() on my menu item and I’m on the French version /fr, the children property is not empty and contains the other available languages such as /en.
But when I’m on the English version, /en or / (base language), the children property of my menu is empty as if I had no other languages set up with Polylang.
