Did you add them to the menu?
Did you check to ensure the page was published and not marked private?
So for example if you are requiring about the header in specific, usually you have to change the size of the header in the theme and the php file.
If you are talking a picture in a post or page you pick the size and it converts to the size you requested.

If you have a child theme, you should not be affected by an update. And as Lorro says, make sure you back it up before attempting this.
Did you indent it under your blog. It has to be indented for it to show up.
