OK thanks. The domain’s moved now, so I can use absolute URL references, so I’ve closed this.

Thanks Christian. I can create a link to an absolute url, but since I don’t yet have the domain transferred I am working with a temporary url to access my site. Is there any way of putting a relative link in? At the moment my old html is in its own directory in wp-content, but I can move it if that helps.

Yes thanks Christian. I’ve just tried that out & it works, but it’s not quite what I wanted. I wanted to have both the old site and the WordPress site available at the same time, having the old html up alongside WordPress, with a link from a WordPress post to my html index file. I just can’t work out how to make that link work. I can shift my html files wherever they will work, but how do I set the link up?

OK got that – thanks very much for your help gf. I’ll have to come back to this tomorrow,as I’ve got to go out now. I’ll try to get it sorted in the morning!

I changed the nameservers for the new domain this morning,& that appears to have propagated: it no longer returns data from the old site. The trouble I have with the instructions is that they all seem to be about moving files around, not about changing the domain name without moving files around. or can it only be done by moving the files?

Great thanks gf – it got me back to where I had been, working OK on the original domain name. What the script won’t do is to get it working with the new domain name though. If I run the script to change to the new doamin name the new name isn’t found, & the old one still gives a result, with a corrupted theme. Any ideas why?

OK thanks I’ll give it a go. I’ll try to change it back to what it was first. If that give me a working site I’ll then try running it again to change to the new domain name. Does that make sense?

It doesn’t tell me what to do next. Have I trashed my WordPress installation or not? If so, presumably I’ll have to reinstall it & restore my content. If not, what is the next thing to do? What have I done wrong? Did I “forget to change the locations”, in which case I need to go through that section. Or have I “accidentally changed [my] WordPress site URL”, in which case I need to go through that section. Or is it neither, & perhaps I need to “Use the Search and Replace for WordPress Databases Script”. I need someone who understands it to guide me through!

Yes I did, but it assumes a level of knowledge I haven’t got. It refers to tables I know nothing about, & doesn’t give me any help with backing out what I’ve already changed – because although I know what I changed wan’t what I should have done, I don’t understand what’s wrong, so I can’t fix it.

I imagine that somewhere in WordPress there’s a parameter file of some sort I’ve changed inappropriately. Presumably if I were to change it back, then I’d be back where I was before, with a working site on the old domain name. I can’t use WordPress to change it via the General Settings screen, but presumably I can fix it by editing the parameter file manually. If I knew where to find it & what to change. But as yet I don’t.

Thanks. I’ve had a read through, but it didn’t really help me. It’s all about moving things around: I’ve not moved anything as far as I’m aware, & if that’s what I need to do, I don’t know why. It may explain how I should have gone about trying to change to a different domain name, but I don’t understand it of it does. And it doesn’t tell me how I can back out the change that’s left me unable to use WordPress at all.
