Thanks so much for the prompt reply. I have now taken your advice on the following:

I have deactivated and reactivated the plugins one by one….no luck.

I switched to the Twenty Eleven theme…no gravatar appeared there either.

I had already checked the avatar settings in ‘Discussion’

This leaves me with resetting the plugins folder, and to be honest, I have had a look, and because of my inexperience, that scares me!I would be afraid of messing something up.
I am going to try to get someone to do that for me, I think.
