I have been using the dropdowns. I created the pages from the pages tab on the left hand side and selected the template for each one. I have watched the process of setting up a static page for your front page and blog on youtube.
I think it may be a problem with WAMP but i maybe wrong?

Can I change this, i am selecting the options from the drop down list? i.e
Front page displays
Your latest posts
A static page (select below)
Front page: index.php
Posts page: blog.php
I assumed this would work? p.s thanks for your quick response!! 🙂
