I eventually found that the image shrinking was caused by properties in the html rather than the css. It was still generating the page with smaller images even when I modified the html in the editor.
The only thing that affects my images and their properties outside of my own pages is Jetpacks Photon and when I turned it off my images are now correct size!

I’ve got the same kind of problem. I’m setting up a customisable wordpress.org portfolio site on my server. I originally made the site on wordpress.com and I intend to use that as a backup. My problem is the same shrinking of project page images down to 522px width instead of the theme maximum, on some pages they’re even aligned left even though added them centred.
Looks fine on .com
