This worked for me. Changing the (settings->reading) settings to “latest posts” made the front page widget section return, and solved the sidebar issue for me.

I just updates to 1.0.9 and the front page widget area has disappeared. I can’t edti it in the theme customize options at all. It just disappeared.
The ability to add things to it in the widgets menu is still there, but it’s not displaying anywhere on the page. And the sidebar is now visable on the front page, even though I selected no sidebar in the options.
Yes, I am usign this, and have it set up and testedt o allow “anonymous” event entries.
I am looking for a way to limit the dates and times that can be entered ina new event. Is that possible?
