If you are not using a SMTP plugin (or similar) then WordPress will use the PHP mail() function. Some ISPs have a problem with this and block it.
I have had no end of problems unless I use a plugin or have some other software that comes with an SMTP feature. To save you a headache forever, you might just want to install one and put this whole affair behind you. 🙂
