I had a similar problem of the upgrade just churning on endlessly without any error or progress message when trying to use the dashboard upgrade link. When I did some reading, it turns out that the MySQL version my database was in is not supported by the latest version. That is, my database was in MySQL 4.0 and now 5.0 is required. I ended up having to do an import of my old database into a new one set up with 5.0 and then edit wp-config to reflect the new database info. After all of that, I just went and did the upgrade manually via ftp rather than trying to use the built-in upgrade, so I can’t say for sure that it absolutely fixed the issue. Nonetheless, with a few side issues probably not related to that (like posting being broken from the “new post” page), I am indeed now upgraded.

Do you know if I re-installed wp 2.9.2 would I lose all the content and comments? Was going to try the re-install from the amin area, but not sure about it.

I would suggest doing a database backup first, perhaps using your host’s admin panel rather than the wp dashboard to get around the possibility that whatever is your problem would prevent backing up from working well either. Then, yes, you can always reinstall a fresh version. If you did it from within wp last time, you might try the more tedious but at least different method of doing it via sftp this time. Also, double-check that your host has the necessary program versions running (and you’re using them) to support this build–somewhere in a recent upgrade the minimum requirement went from MySQL 4 to 5, and this may require building a new database (it did on my host).

I’m not sure we’re having the exact same problem, even though the errors affect the same sort of tasks. In my case, autosave eventually captures the completed post and then if I reopen it from the edit posts list, I can publish from there so long as I don’t change anything (if I do, it again fails).

My posting frequency is low enough that this isn’t unbearable, but if it gets too tedious, I may just roll back my upgrade to an earlier version even if it’s less secure and then hope that the next release straightens things out again. For you, losing stuff entirely, I’d say backing up the database and giving serious consideration to a rollback might be the only practical way around this particular roadblock since so few of us seem to be affected and that means it’s unlikely to get WP’s attention.

I’ve been having the same problem since upgrading to the latest version. Did all the usual stuff w/ plugins and themes, none of which had changed since publishing worked before the upgrade. But publish ALWAYS takes me to the error “Your attempt to edit this post: “[whatever the title is]” has failed. Please try again.” The only way I can publish is to wait for it to autosave a draft, go to the edit posts page, use the “edit” command to open the post, and then “publish” goes through just fine.

I’m not on GoDaddy and I am having trouble seeing it as a hosting problem since, you know, it worked moments before the upgrade. And yes, I even repeated the whole upgrade manual upload, just to be sure.

What interests me is that this error happens so quickly–I know that there hasn’t been more than a very brief interval to contact the hosting server, and I wonder if that’s the problem, that it’s not allowing enough time to make the request and be answered.
