In reply to: 404 in header after updateSimilar thing has happened to me in recent days.
Originally for the admin page only, I “was” getting a prettier version of the 404 error without any further content (but in my case the website itself was still functional with themes all fine in place)
48 hours later, this developed into the main site going down also.
I have my site hosted on Netregistry, and they’ve informed me that some malicious scripts got through (I actually pay for a security service through them which is supposed to prevent this sort of thing, so they are now working towards getting a backup version of the website in place).
I’ll be looking at some extra protective steps once it’s up again (Have a look at http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/9-most-useful-htaccess-tricks-for-wordpress/).
Symptoms seem similar, but I hope you don’t end up in the same space as me (check your error_log in your wp-admin folder to see if you are getting the same error I was “Cannot redeclare login_header()”. This was because the SAME file was being loaded twice wp-load.php)…
Sorry, that I’ve not got any “solution” to offer, but if your symptoms are the same, you’ll be wanting to get onto a back-up copy I’d wager.
We’ve just been told by the hosting organisation that they reckon the site has been compromised.
I’ve placed the burden on them for now as I had subscribed to paying for a security service directly with them, which has failed to protect my site, AND failed to make us aware of the problems.
With any luck, I’ll have a backup copy of the site running shortly.

My understanding of this is pretty scratchy, but I think this is “vanilla”. This is what it currently looks like…
Am I right in saying that the “RewriteBase /” command is always forcing to the public_html folder?

Not sure if this is also part of the bigger issue, but there are log entries from around 24 hours ago that refer to “out of Memory” issues.
My client first reported issues before 9th March, but the initial problem could have occurred on 7th Feb to render the wp-admin URL unusable, and the memory issues on 9th March could have impacted the website itself?

So I’ve changed both back.
I have also since worked out that the Error_Log files are in fact unique in each folder, but reporting the Exact same error message when I attempt the relevant URL.
