Thanks to Mindbender 3D for the thoughtful assist.

I marked this “resolved” as apparently XP HOME requires 8 character passwords where XP PRO (at least my version) takes 6 character passwords. Bob

Please suggest another title for this problem so it might get some attention. Thanks Bob

I changed the default values in public-html/wp-pass.php to zero. Both the 10 days and the 864000 seconds need to be zero. I belive this means the life time of the WordPress created cookie is zero. Any other value would implie that the page would remain accessible without password entry to all commers for the lifetime (days) of the cookie ie until the users computer shuts down not just ending the wordPress session. To demonstrate in IE 8 try deleting History/Cookies enter via
    Tools.
I wonder where in all the WordPress lessons and training CD(s) this subject is discussed? Bob
