  • Hi Cheaper

Many thanks for bringing this to my attention. I’m just setting up a WordPress blog and was going to use
    mydomain.com/postId/article,
so now I guess I’ll have to use
    mydomain.com/year/article

Is there anything wrong with just using %year% in a permalink, and not %month% or %day%? Apart from making sure a years worth of posts don’t repeat the same article name?

And I have seen many blogs using just PostID, so I think there should at least be a warning when you try to use them.
I must have asked about 5 times if anyone could see any problems just using PostID, and this was the first time I saw this problem.

    Hi

    Thanks for your replies.
It seems to be working now, although I don’t know what’s changed. Maybe it took time to update?

    Many thanks

    If I type in…
    feeds.feedburner.com/mydomain
then I get my RSS feed.

    So Feedburner is working ok.
It’s just that my blog, when I click on the RSS link, is still linking to…
    http://www.mydomain.com/feed

    Has anyone got any ideas?

    Many thanks

    Or has a solution?

    Hi Moshu

    Bummer.
So how would I go about removing the /blog/ part of the permalink?

And I think I’m going to wait until 2.5 before installing. it would be a bit tough getting used to the layout of 2.3.3 admin pages and then have to re-learn a week later for 2.5.

    Many thanks

    Hi BPartch

    Great, thanks for your reply.
    If my blog is at
    domain.com/blog
Does that mean the blog folder will be added to the permalinks, i.e
    domain.com/blog/2008/post-name
    rather than the preferred
    domain.com/2008/post-name
    ?

    Many thanks

    Great, many thanks Moshu.

I also read that not using the date in the permalinks was only a problem with the calendar in WordPress v1.x.x, so is okay now.

IS there any disadvantage to using the ‘Post-Id’ instead of ‘date’ in the permalinks?

    Many thanks

I found this in the WordPress online docs…

There’s an easy way to having your posts end in a .html extension, using the structure tags above. Following the example used on properly terminating permalinks, you could have a page like http://yoursite.com/2006/01/01/happy-newyear.html with this rule:

    /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%.html

Now it only provides limited, if any SEO benefits

    Cheers

    Hi Rushhh

That does sound like a good solution Rushhh and Gangleri.

If you delete post #249, what happens to post #250?
I presume it stays at #250 and there is just a gap at post #249 (probably a 404?) or does post #250 now become #249?

    Many thanks

    Hi Again Gangleri

    Ok, great, thank you.
What I forgot to add was – should I just install WordPress have a play, then if I find out a better permalink structure or blog address after installing, it will be no problem/ hassle to update it? Rather than research it all first?

(Well actually I was going to wait for v2.5 before I install)

    Many thanks again

    Hi Gangleri

Thanks for your reply and tips.
IS post-id simply the number of the post i.e. 437?

I’ve done a quick search and some people are saying that not using the date in the structure messes up the calendar. Have you found this?

Can you see any problems if I just use the year for the structure?
    domain.com/2008/post-name/

    Many thanks Gangleri
