Thanks. Would it resolve the problem to uninstall and reinstall the Simple Membership plugin, or is there a better way?
Thanks. I added a new test member and everything worked. The test member is listed as a Simple Membership member and as a WP user.

I double-checked. She is not listed under WP users and she is not listed as a member in the Simple Membership section.
When I try to add her as a member, her assigned password fields go blank as soon as I hit the submit button.
