Made it work by manually editing wp-options table in DB then following the rest of the steps. 🙂

I should add that we installed MU in its own directory to start with, so what we are now trying to do is just change the siteurl and then copy the index.php and .htaccess files across, then edit the wp-config like you normally would. Sounds so simple, doesn’t it?
Yes, because it’s about collecting information for marketing purposes and being able to write “hi, so-and-so” or only email alerts to people from one region in a tailored way, or being able to phone subscribers if they win a competition without having to contact them again for their number…
