    The problem has now been solved.

    After conversation with my host and some investigation they uploaded new .htaccess files into the WP root directories. They said they then changed permissions so the group owner is APACHE (whatever that means?).

    The short of it is that permalinks could now be set to my desired custom settings and no more server lock-up have been experience.

    I am not sure what the permissions were they said they did and they did not elaborate.

    Yes, mod_rewrite is running.

    I have just spoken to the hosting company and they are going to look into the problem today. They were intrigued by the problem and will try to help.

    I will report back is we find a resolution.

    I should have made it clear that it was 3.1 I attempted to install on my second domain.

    I haven’t tried 3.05 again … yet.
