Go into the Customizer’s Theme Options panel and check the box next to: “If featured image isn’t set, display colored block on blog page.”
That does exactly what I want. Thanks for the hint – I somehow overlooked it.
Don’t edit the theme files directly, otherwise your changes will be overwritten every time the theme is updated.
I created a custom theme based on Cubic theme and did my modifications there.

In reply to: [Store WP] Custom Menu repeats in Header MenuPlease let me point out my initial posting: “That means, first the elements in German translations appear and then the elements in English translation.” = All elements are there twice, on time in English and one time in German.
I translated the theme to German and I received the result I expected: Both elements are still there twice – but now twice in German.
