Thanks for the ideas – I decided to reinstall wp, update my ftp client, and log in as a different user to ftp.
Not sure which was the problem, but now it all works!
still not working, any ideas?
thanks for the help, I cleared the cache but nothing changed.
I downloaded some of the files from the server just to be sure that the changes were really in place, and they are there on the server.
