The site connection appears to be working again, at least according to https://jetpack.com/support/debug/ – Hopefully that did the trick.
I’ll keep an eye on our articles to see if the related articles section keeps showing up blank.

I don’t know of any specific posts that used to show the related posts before and are not now. I guess the main issue is that the “Similar Articles” heading is being displayed even when the article has none to display. Does that make sense? Shouldn’t the title be hidden when there aren’t any?
