and i just need to add a couple more things i found:
1. the category that i’ve put almost all of my new posts in on my wp.com blog does not have a check box next to it in the admin section of my new hosted wp blog.
2. even though there are many posts that did import, the admin section shows none in each of my categories.

correct – none of the new posts from wordpress.com imported. in addition, none of the old posts that i assigned a category in wordpress.com imported. only blogger posts that i had not yet categorized in wp.com imported.
yes, i have the xml file. it’s 1.7 mb.
