wolfsbane, i think i have a possible solution if you are still looking
i simply went into the config.php file
(wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/spellchecker)
and commented out the TinyGoogleSpell and un-commented the TinyPspellShell, now it’s working no problem.
I am having this same issue, only I am using vr. 2.3.3, here is a screen capture of the error pop-up.
I do hope that there is a solution.
