Is it possible that this is only happening because we’re in sandbox mode? Looking at the gateway.authorize.aim.php file is appears this functionality is built-in. (in other words, if tickets are free a separate function occurs)

By editing the AIM gateway, do you mean somewhere in the Events Manager code or in the auth.net account settings? I’m surprised this isn’t an option built into Events Manager.
