I am back on-line after being away for a couple of days. The support ticket referred to above is very interesting although I must admit I have some trouble following the details. https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/46442

What’s clear is that others are having the same or similar problems. My hosting provider is Easyhosting: https://www.easyhosting.com/

It’s possible they inserted some code although I suspect not. However there are two other sources of “external code” on my site:
    1. Google Analytics.
    2. Sucuri which I use for website monitoring, firewall, and backups.

Could it have anything to do with one of them? I can live without Google Analytics but I definitely need Sucuri.

Also, the one thing that makes my site a bit different is that I’m still on PHP 5.6 or maybe lower. That will be rectified shortly as I’ve now converted the site to a modern theme and plug-ins. Here’s my next steps:
    1. Restore the site from a recent backup. To WP 4.9.10.
    2. Upgrade to PHP 7.2. (I couldn’t do this with my previous obsolete theme.)
    3. Try the upgrade again to WP 5.1.1 on the off-chance the PHP version was causing the problem. Do another restore if it doesn’t work.
    4. Give you an update on the results.

Thanks to everyone for your help on this. Much appreciated.

I am very reluctant to make any coding changes as suggested in the link provided by Joy. I’m not a coder and concerned about making things worse. I wouldn’t now what to do if a problem was identified. E.g., I don’t know what to do with javascript or Console errors.

I confirmed that the browser is not an issue since the same issues happen with three browsers. Also, as mentioned above, my website is very simple and clean. The active theme and plugins are all recently purchased and unmodified.

It seems that the visual editor is not working with WP 5.1.1. It worked just fine with WP 4.9.10. Very strange. Seems that Marpel (above) is having the same problems.

As I said above, a partial solution that doesn’t work long term for me since I don’t write in html code.

I just tried something and got a partial solution. I went to my Profile page and checked the “Disable visual editor when writing” check box. (It was unchecked.) The Edit Page screen now shows the text in the proper font colour. I.e., I can see it and edit it. Yeah!

Then I went back to the profile page and unchecked the box hoping that it would somehow reset things. It went back to where I was before. Darn!

I need the visual editor because I don’t know how to write HTML.

Closing the loop on this. I took Kartik’s suggestion and bought the Juicebox photo viewer plugin: https://juicebox.net/

It works exactly as I wanted. Thanks again Kartik!

Thanks Kartik. I will give it a try.
