In reply to: “page” serve as category only?I don’t understand how a “custom page template” would solve the problem …or would it serve as a sort of “include” that contains that section of the menu? Even then, wouldn’t that still require that any changes, additions, deletions, etc to the menu must be done at least twice?
I don’t have sufficient javascript skills to do this myself but, if there’s no other way mightn’t the next best solution be to turn off linking on the menus top level?

In reply to: Static Pages into Categories with Horizontal MenuI think I’m doing something similar to you.
I’m somewhat new to the WordPress world as well, I’m not sure if what I’m doing is the right thing, I dont want to lead you astray, and there may be a better, more elegant way to accomplish this but what I did was create a “page” to use as the “category” (that will appear in the menu bar) then put the actual pages in hierarchies under that “Parent page”.
The only problem I see with this is that someone can select that “page” which will directed them to a blank page. This kind of makes it necessary to add links to the actual pages as content of those “category Parent pages” as well.
(Seems like unecessary extra work and could be error prone but what is the alternative?)You may find something useful by following my post about this same subject: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/307407?replies=1#post-1198509
I haven’t looked into them yet but just found that there are plugins available when you search using “page categories” including http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/misiek-page-category/
