Thanks in advance.I am on the same boat, I found SimpleModal to be so nice while testing but can not put it on the production site because of the redirect problem.

Solved.
BuddyPress Sliding Login Panel plugin was the culprit. After deactivated it, all went back to normal.
Now to work on trying to find a fix or equivalent to that plugin. Hopefully someone that might encounter with the same problem can find this thread.
