Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. Unfortunately, the main problem is retrieving the content rather than fixing the security. Without all the content, I may as well just do a clean install of WordPress and add some security plugins for next time.
Dreamhost have been in touch and said there’s absolutely nothing they can do. No restoring, no back up, nothing, all gone. They’ve given me 6 months free hosting which doesn’t come close to replacing the 6 years of content. They don’t ‘guarantee’ any back up so there’s nothing else I can do.
Time for a stiff drink me thinks.
