Yes,
the issue was caused by my colleague, who deleted the overlay image behind the texts on the slider.
Reuploading the image and reapplying it to every slide solved the issue.

Automatically crop and resize slider images based on the size above setting was turned off, when the images were uploaded (still is).
Are there no other ways Master Slider would create extra image sizes?
