Ok that second article seemed to really help, I think. I found this one too about the differences between wordpress.org and wordpress.com.

So the first step seems to be transferring my wordpress.com site to wordpress.org by using the import/export functions.
From there, I’m hoping the path becomes a little bit clearer.
