Just managed to get it working!!
The wp-config.php file was missing the ?> off the last line. Have just downloaded it again to check it wasn’t me and it is actually missing off the WordPress file download.
Now either my hardware/software is doing something to the file when it downloads, or someone needs to tell WordPress.

* wp-config.php is edited correctly
* secret key has been generated and added
* db_name, db_username, db_password all confirmed by service provider
* using ‘localhost’
* all files uploaded again to htdoc root folder in a folder now called wordpress
* now using filezilla to upload
* have started from scratch 3 times now, deleting and uploading new files.
* have tried moving wp-config.php directly into root
Still getting that ‘Error establishing a database connection’ page
This should be simple…..
Have a feeling my service provider is rubbish, am using Streamline.net.
Any other ideas to get this up and running?
