You should see a usergroup section on your user details page. That displays a list of all usergroups with checkboxes. So yes you can add a user to as many groups you like.
The URL is just fine but it turns out to be something in User Access Manager which I use to make specific downloads available for specific groups. Having the file unlocked, the download works well and it doesn’t need a media object apparently. Anyway I will look further in the User Access Manager part, SDM is doing its job well.

It is limited by the php.ini settings on your webserver. Hosting providers usually limit the max upload size to keep server memory accessible. You might be able to change it, but not sure if they will appreciate it.
