what should I look for to see if it’s “clobbered?” The .htaccess file is on the server still as it should be…

there were a few of us working on the site…I was in the process of installing Gallery on the site, and another person was doing something else (it’s a print magazine’s site, with a few of us maintaining the web version from across the US)
