You might need to make sure that you have a valid WordPress API Key. After my initial install I did not have ANY plugins activated and I was having the same problem when trying to update to 2.7.1. After install the WP-Stats plugin and being forced to apply a valid API I am now able to run ALL the way through the update. It took maybe 2 minutes.
