Postman is configured and has delivered 216 emails.Ok. I understand now. So instead of creating a single email message with 216 recipients, mass messaging, or buddy press, is creating 216 emails each with a single recipient. That’s stupid :p No wonder it times out.
Definitely looks like the mail queuing plugin is your answer!!
You might want to post a message on Mass Messaging questioning this behaviour. I don’t see how that could work anywhere with more than a couple hundred users.

I have a feeling your newsletter plugin is bypassing both wp mandrill and Postman.
I’d recommend against posting that email address here, since the forums are public.
Just the domain! Domains are not, for the most part, secret. It’s hard to give advice about MX and SPF and whatnot without a domain to go on.

But if you don’t mind one last thing, perhaps you could help me test the beta version of my own plugin. It implements the Mandrill API to send mail to Mandril, and I’d love to know if it takes as long as you claim wp mandrill is taking. The plugin is here and if you try it and have feedback we can discuss in that forum.

Not my plugin.
even with the Mandrill plugin.
The idea with the Mandrill plugin is you avoid SMTP altogether by using the API (web service). That’ll only take a few seconds to send your request.
Unless you have some other reason for using the mandrill plugin in SMTP mode?
